Here Are Some Helpful Tips...

  1. 1. Plan your storage space. Place items you may need to access often towards the front. Allow for walkways.
  2. 2. Make up an inventory of your stored items and keep it in a safe place at home or in a safe deposit box.
  3. 3. Prepare your space by placing a protective cover on the floor under your goods. Place your storage items on 2x 4 boards or on pallets to guard against dampness.
Any concrete floor may become cold and damp.
  4. 4. Put larger items in your unit first. This allows you to put the smaller items on top and maximize your space.
  5. 5. CAUTION: Do not store anything COMBUSTIBLE (i.e., paint thinner, gasoline, solvents, paint, etc).
  6. 6. Use similarly sized boxes for easy stacking. Be sure your boxes are strong enough to hold 25-30 lbs.
  7. 7. List the contents of each box on all four sides. Number the boxes and seal them with tape.
  8. 8. Use all of the vertical space available to you in your unit. Stack lighter boxes on top of heavier boxes.
  9. 9. Dishes and glasses should be wrapped in paper and packed in sturdy boxes. Stack them on top.
  10. 10. Pictures and mirrors should be wrapped in cardboard, marked "FRAGILE" and stacked on end.
  11. 11. Furniture with drawers can be utilized as storage places for pictures, knick-knacks, china, silverware, small items, etc. Wrap them in tablecloths, towels,
                  or blankets to prevent breakage.
  12. 12. Shovels, hoes, rakes and hoses can be stored together in empty trash cans. Stack extra cans inside one another.
  13. 13. Disassemble awkward items such as bed frames and tables for more compact storage.
  14. 14. Sofas and loveseats can be stored on-end to save floor space. Cover furniture with blankets or plastic (available for sale in our office) to protect against dust.
  15. 15. Consider the use of desiccants to combat dampness (Available for sale in our Office).
  16. 16. If you stand mattresses on their side, "prop" them up so they stand straight. They may tend to bend out of shape and become lumpy.
  17. 17. Rent the smallest amount of space you need and pack the space full.
  18. 18. Do not place heavy or sharp objects on top of upholstered furniture.
  19. 19. Make sure refrigerators and freezers are thoroughly dry and stored with doors slightly ajar to prevent mold growth.
  20. 20. Don't forget about the space on top of freezers and inside stoves and refrigerators. These can be used for boxes and extra storage space.
  21. 21. Remove light bulbs from lamps before storage to prevent accidental breakage. Pack lampshades separately to avoid damage.
  22. 22. Be careful packing items in newspaper. Ink from the paper may bleed.
